Bandai Namco surprised fans all over this morning with the trailer for the hotly-anticipated follow-up DLC for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Eritrea. Fortunately, I was able to sit down and speak with Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki in addition to seeing an advance video that verified the DLC's June 21 release date.

We talk about the specifics of Shadow of the Erdtree, some of Elden Ring's more audacious decisions, his ideas on maybe stepping aside from the director role in the future, and the status of the industry and how it pertains to FromSoftware during the interview.

Check out our in-depth analysis of the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer and continue reading for the full interview!
Could you play Shadow of the Erdtree to set the scene for us? Where is it happening? Could you also give us a general overview of the plot of the story?
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki: To begin with, Shadow of the Erdtree takes place in a whole new land. It is an entirely new map that is not part of the Lands Between. Unlike the Erdtree in the Lands Between, this territory is overshadowed by the specific Shadow of the Erdtree. And once more, everything happens on a completely different, geographically distinct map. Thus, a warp will be involved.

It theoretically exists in the same universe as the Lands Between in terms of concepts and setting. However, this has become physically detached owing to a story point we won't be revealing today, so you'll be traveling to the Shadow of the Erdtree country separately.
The player will thus travel to this Land of Shadow to follow in Miquella's footsteps. Michelle, as many players who viewed the previously posted art may have surmised. Michelle is the one who traveled to the Land of Shadow, and the players will be tracking him down and going where he goes in an attempt to figure out what he plans to accomplish there.

And speaking of this new land we are visiting, what is its organizational system? Does it have a structure similar to that of the Lands Between, with its minor and legacy dungeons? Could you briefly explain the differences between the base game and the world?
Miyazaki: Indeed. We believe that the experience players get will be comparable to that of the original game. As you mentioned, this will be organized similarly, with open field maps, large-scale legacy dungeons, and small- to medium-sized legacies. It is our aim that throughout the entire structure, gamers will experience a similar sense of vastness and adventure.

About the world in the original game, how big is the world?
Miyazaki: It's difficult to respond to this question with great precision and without giving away too much, but if you compare it to anything in terms of size or scale, it's probably bigger than the region of Limgrave seen in the main game.
You spoke up Miquella previously, and I know there have been a lot of inquiries from fans regarding that character. Can you provide us with any specific information regarding this character's involvement in the DLC? Furthermore, I am aware that the first scene in the teaser features Mohg's boss arena with the hand protruding from the cocoon. Will we learn about what Mohg did to
